Description
A wonderful North American native perennial similar to garden mums in unrivaled flower power but easier to grow, Grape Crush is a New England Aster forming a sizable rounded mound up to 30 inches tall and 4 feet wide that becomes literally smothered with masses of rich, dark purple double daisies in early to mid fall. They are terrific accents for fall blooming grasses and other shrubs and trees and add needed late season color in the perennial border. To bring the beauty indoors, cut a few of the taller flowering stems for a fresh bouquet. Late season butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will thank you for planting this floriferous beauty!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 24 to 30 inches tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Grape Crush New England Aster is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a border in larger spaces. Also suitable as a solo or combined with other late summer bloomers in container gardens. A fine addition to perennial gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 30 inches apart for solid groupings and borders; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Grape Crush New England Aster is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility in full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best performance. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. We cut the plant back to the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
