Description

Not sure if we can call it a "carpet," but for a Korean Fir, 'Green Carpet' forms a beautiful low mound only 2 feet tall, spreading 5 to 6 feet wide at ten years of age. It makes for a lovely specimen or groundcover with fresh, bright green new growth emerging in spring, turning to rich dark green by summer. In late spring to early summer, abundant, very showy purple cones adorn the plant. Green Carpet is more heat tolerant than other firs, and with little if any pruning required to maintain its low form, it is excellent in sunny landscape borders, garden beds, home foundation plantings, or on slopes and embankments. Though we have it listed as cold hardy to 5b some sources say it is hardy in Zone 4.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Green Carpet Korean Fir is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or containers, in groupings or as a groundcover in larger landscape borders, or on slopes. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Use as a specimen or space 4.5 to 5 feet as a groundcover

Growing Preferences

The Green Carpet Korean Fir is easy to grow in damp to moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So plant it in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. No pruning is necessary.
