Description

Green Mound Juniper, also known as the Japanese Garden Juniper, is a very attractive ground-hugging conifer that distinctively mounds at the center of the plant. Attractive mint-green foliage grows 3 to 4 inches in height with the center mound reaching 8 to 12 inches. The overall spread of the plant is about 6 feet. This one is highly used in bonsai and its central leader can be trained to grow up a stake with branches cascading down like a fountain. An excellent selection for Asian gardens, as a groundcover on slopes or to underplant small trees such as Japanese Maples and Crape Myrtle.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 12 inches tall and spreading 6 feet or more in width, the Green Mound Juniper is ideal for use as a groundcover plant on sunny slopes and embankments or in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It will cascade over walls and is a great choice to underplant small trees such as Japanese Maple and Crape Myrtle. Its central leader can be trained to grow up a stake to create an exquisite, cascading topiary.  Can be planted in pots, planters and other containers and trained to grow as a bonsai tree. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 6 feet apart for mass plantings; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Green Mound Juniper is easy to grow in most any well-drained soil of average to low fertility. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot and other harmful plant diseases. Best in full sun however will tolerate some light shade. We recommend at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
