Description

Not to be confused with the vine called poison sumac, Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac, scientifically known as Rhus aromatica, is NOT at all poisonous. Unlike its larger growing Sumac cousins, which can reach small tree status in size, Gro-Low forms a low and spreading mound to maybe 2 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, making it perfect for use in the landscape as a groundcover or border in fertile or poor soils. In spring, it produces loads of inconspicuous yellow flowers followed by conspicuous red berries, which various types of birds will appreciate. Perhaps its most outstanding feature is when its dense, glossy green foliage turns to striking, fiery shades of red, orange, and yellow in fall. You might be happy to know that deer, disease, and insect pests leave this low-maintenance North American native alone.

Wildlife Value
Ring-necked pheasant, bobwhite quail, and wild turkey eat the fruit. Flowers provide a nectar source to beneficial native bees. Sumac is the larval host plant of the Luna Moth and the Spring Azure Butterfly

Landscape & Garden Uses

growing to 2 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, Gro-Low Sumac is ideal for use as a colorful specimen in smaller garden spaces or grouped or as a low border in larger landscape spaces. It is perfect for use as a soil stabilizer on slopes and embankments. A fine addition to wildlife gardens and native plant gardens.

Growing Preferences

Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac is very easy to grow in most any soil of average to low fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. It is very drought tolerant when established. USDA Zones: 3a-9b  Find Your Zone
