Description

Exceptionally cold hardy to USDA Zone 5, the ‘Herbert’ Azalea is a truly spectacular Gable Hybrid evergreen azalea that produces a profusion of stunningly beautiful lavender-purple ruffled flowers with a deep purplish-red speckled blotch at the center. The flowers appear in spring and will be sure to catch the eye of every passerby and are excellent for cutting and use in indoor floral arrangements.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to about 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, Herbert Azalea is ideal for use as an accent or specimen, in groupings or mass plantings, or as a low hedge in shaded landscape borders, woodland gardens, and home foundation plantings. Azaleas do remarkably well under pine trees. Blooming branches are great for cutting to create stunning indoor floral arrangements.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for solid hedges or mass plantings;  6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Azalea variety is not reliably winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy growing it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Evergreen Azaleas are easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. They prefer a moist but well-drained and acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun is ideal. Moderate drought tolerance when established.
