Description
Handsome and loving life on the shady side, even the deepest shade, the Himalayan Sweet Box is a compact, low-growing, broadleaf evergreen shrub that spreads slowly to form a colony. The thick and glossy lanceolate leaves provide a fine texture in the landscape. It is a perfect choice for growing under large trees, decks and other shady areas and around patios, porches and other outdoor sitting or living spaces where in late winter its abundant clusters of dainty white flowers with a fragrance like hyacinths can be enjoyed from close up. The flowers are followed by attractive, lustrous black berries. Himalayan Sweet Box is very easy to grow and drought tolerant when established, but do make sure to avoid direct afternoon sunlight as it causes the leaves to lose their luster. Deer and rabbits don't touch it in our gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense spreading mound 1 to 2 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Himalayan Sweet Box is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border or groundcover in shady landscape or woodland borders and home foundation plantings. In our gardens, it thrives in the shade under the canopies of large shade trees where not much else will grow. Plant near outdoor living and sitting spaces so the sweet fragrance of the flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, woodland gardens, Asian gardens, rock gardens, container gardens and around water gardens.

Growing Preferences
Himalayan Sweet Box is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained to somewhat dry (when established) acidic soil of average or better fertility and part shade to full, deep shade. Morning and evening sun are okay but avoid the direct afternoon sun. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and do well in dry shade. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Does not require pruning however will respond well to it for shaping purposes. Prune after flowering in spring.
