Description
As its name suggests, Baptisia 'Honey Roasted' features unique multicolor flowers in shades of honey. The buds are deep mahogany, opening to bronze-orange with bright yellow keels. The abundant, lupine-like, 10" flower spires rise above and contrast beautifully with the upright, vase-shaped, rounded clump of mutred blue-green foliage, reaching 3 to 3.5 feet tall in bloom and about 3.5 to 4 feet wide. Because the foliage is so handsome, Honey Roasted can be used in place of shrubs in the landscape or as a stunning display of color in perennial borders. The flowers are followed by showy black seedpods that kids love because they rattle when shaken when dry. The fresh flowers and seed pods are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. A super easy-to-grow and extremely long-lived North American native perennial that you'll be glad you planted for many years to come.
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 3.5 feet tall and 3.5 to 4 feet wide, Honey Roasted Baptisia is ideal as an accent in smaller garden spaces or grouped in larger landscape and perennial borders or meadow gardens. It is also suitable for growing in containers. It is a fine addition to butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, cottage gardens, native plant gardens, orange theme gardens, and low-water needs gardens.
Growing Preferences
Honey Roasted Baptisia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. We suggest at least 4 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering. Once established, it is exceptionally drought tolerant. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot. Plants can be cut back near the ground in late winter before new growth emerges.
