Description

One of our favorite upright Junipers, Iowa is an attractive evergreen conifer that grows naturally in a conical form with no pruning necessary. As conifers go, it is considered fast growing with attractive blue-sage green foliage that leans heavily to the blue! With no pruning Iowa presents a unique and noticeable growth habit with its outer branchlets leaning slightly away from the main form. Combine this wonderful feature with the blue foliage and Iowa is one handsome guy!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to about 10 to 12 feet tall by 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity, with dense foliage you can't see through, the Iowa Juniper is idea for use as a specimen, in groupings, or for a dense privacy hedge or screen in sunny landscape borders. Also a very nice as a corner plant or espalier in home foundation plantings. It shears well so makes for the perfect outdoor Christmas tree! A fine addition to the conifer garden, rock garden and Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedges and privacy screens;  8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Iowa Juniper is easy to grow in locations that provide well-drained soils and full sun to mostly sun. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. It is a very low maintenance plant and exceptionally drought tolerant when established. No pruning is necessary however can be trained to various shapes for topiary or the perfect outdoor Christmas tree.
