Description
All of our Clematis vines are trellised 2 year old plants in a 1 gallon pot.
Extraordinarily floriferous and showy, 'Issey' is one of the most compact of the red-flowering Clematis varieties, reaching 3 to 4 feet tall. This makes it a perfect fit for small garden spaces and containers on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Its large, 5 to 6-inch diameter flowers have vibrant red petals, sometimes flushed with purple, surrounding a cluster of contrasting yellow anthers. The first bloom cycle begins in late spring to early summer, with subsequent blooming through late fall! Issey is a stunning vine grown on a trellis or obelisk in garden beds or containers. Underplanting it with grey-colored plants provides a lovely contrast to the flowers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Climbing 3 to 4 feet in height with a spread of 2 to 3 feet or more, the Issey Clematis is ideal for growing on a trellis or obelisk in small garden spaces or containers on or around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces where the flowers can be enjoyed up close. It is a fine addition to Clematis gardens, red theme gardens, cut flower gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2-3 feet apart to cover short fences or trellises
Growing Preferences
The Issey Clematis is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. For best flowering and overall performance, we suggest a minimum of 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate occasional supplemental water during prolonged periods of dry weather. See the pruning instructions just below.
Clematis Pruning Group 3
Clematis in group 3 consists of late-flowering species that bloom from summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season's growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 1 foot. Always leave two good buds below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current season's vines and blooms.
