Description

Here is a beautiful slow-growing pine for the conifer collector that some believe is a hybrid between a Japanese Red Pine and an Austrian Black Pine. It is a dwarf with a globose form, slightly wider than taller, and might reach 6 to 7 feet tall and 7 to 8 feet wide when fully grown. Its branches are clothed in whorls of very straight needles that radiate from around the stems, providing a cloud-like look to the shrub. Easy to grow in well-drained soil of average to low fertility and 6 hours or more of sunlight daily, Jane Kluis is a lovely specimen in the rock garden or conifer collection that will surely draw attention.

Pinus densiflora 'Jane Kluis' was discovered in the mid-1970s by Rudolph Kluis of Marlboro, New Jersey.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Jane Kluis Japanese Pine is ideal as a specimen or spaced grouping in sunny garden beds, landscape borders, and on slopes and embankments. It is also lovely as an accent in home foundation plantings. It is suitable for growing in containers on or around patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, Asian theme gardens, and Xeriscape (low-water-need) gardens.

Spacing:  Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 9 feet or more apart

Growing Preferences

The Jane Kluis Japanese Red Pine is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. It prefers moderately to slightly acidic soil. We suggest six or more hours of direct sunlight daily for the best overall performance. When established, it has moderate drought tolerance. It does not like wet feet, so choose a planting site with very well-drained soil. It does not require pruning, though the new candles can be cut back by 50% of their length to form a more dense plant. How To Prune Junipers & Other Conifers
