Description

This is the single-trunk version of the Japanese Giant Tree Lilac, a beautiful small tree, but large for a lilac, that typically reaches 20 to 30 feet in height and 15 to 20 feet in width when fully grown. It features abundant, large, conical clusters of fragrant, creamy-white flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers stand out very well against the dark green, ovate leaves. It is a fine specimen in sunny landscape borders and around patios, porches, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where it will provide shade, and the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed up close.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Japanese Giant Tree Lilac is ideal for use as a specimen in sunny landscape borders, or two can be used to frame an entrance. It is perfect near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces, where the flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed up close. It is a fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, Asian-themed gardens, or white-theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen or use two to frame an entrance

Growing Preferences

The Japanese Giant Tree Lilac is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, neutral soil (6.5-7.5 pH) and six or more hours of sunlight daily: the more sun, the more flowers. Add pelletized lime if your soil is highly acidic. Fertilize annually in early spring with a light application of organic plant food or slow-release shrub and tree fertilizer. Prune as desired for shaping purposes or size control after spring bloom.
