Description

Commonly called Japanese Yellow Rose, Japanese Kerria or Marigold Bush, Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' is a shade-loving flowering shrub that has been around for a long, long time. We've had and enjoyed it for years growing in our gardens and finally decided it was a shame not to grow such a wonderful plant to offer to our customers. Of course the pom-pom-like bright golden-yellow flowers are the biggest appeal, but the foliage, stems and form are also nice. Thousands of bright golden-yellow marigold like flowers are produced in spring almost covering the arching stems and blackberry bush-like foliage. Occasionally you'll see a rebloom in summer. All-in-all, Pleniflora Kerria is one attractive flowering shrub that is perfectly suited for shady to partially shaded woodland borders and other shady sites.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, 'Pleniflora' Kerria is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in shady to partially shaded woodland and flowering shrub borders. Also suitable for growing in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and perennial gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preference

Japanese Kerria is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained loamy soils of average fertility and part shade to full shade. Morning and late evening sun is okay but direct afternoon sun causes flowers to be pale in color. Amend heavy clay soils to improve drainage. Kerria blooms on old wood from the previous year so make sure to wait to prune until after flowering. May form suckers but these can be easily removed.
