Description

The Japanese Snowbell is a beautiful deciduous flowering tree with a broad rounded crown and horizontal branches that weep as the tree matures to 20 to 30 feet tall and equally as wide. In mid to late spring it features abundant pendulous clusters of fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers with showy yellow stamens. Following the flowers are cream color, olive-shaped fruits that many species of birds love. The attractive, oval shaped, glossy leaves are a rich green turning red and/or yellow with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. The smooth and attractive gray bark becomes fissured with age revealing orange under bark, which adds appeal during the winter in the landscape. An excellent specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and around outdoor sitting and living spaces to provide some shade and where the fragrant, pretty flowers can be enjoyed from close up.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 30 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity, the Japanese Snowbell is ideal for use a specimen or in groupings in landscape and woodland borders. Very nice around outdoor sitting and living spaces where the flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed during the spring bloom. A fine addition to woodland gardens, bird gardens, white theme gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  35 feet for space between trees

Growing Preferences

Japanese Snowbell is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Very low maintenance when left alone and we've seen no serious insect or disease problems.
