A superb winter-flowering shrub or small tree to delight the senses, the 'Jelena' Witch Hazel is adored for her abundant clusters of sweetly fragrant fringe-like flowers that come in mid to late winter, when we need color most in the landscape. Upon close inspection, the crinkly, ribbon-like petals on each 1-inch flower are actually multi-colored, with reddish bases, orange centers and yellow tips. A somewhat slow grower, Jelena forms an upright bush or small tree with ascending but spreading branches to maybe 8 to 12 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up. After the bloom, the branches become clothed in handsome, broadly oval, beautiful green leaves up to 6 inches long that turn to spectacular orange and red shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. A fine specimen, grouping or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders or around patios and other outdoor spaces where the pretty flowers and their sweet aroma can be enjoyed from up close.

Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and equally as wide, Jelena Witch Hazel is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a staggered or straight row hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape, flowering shrub and woodland borders. Very nice around patios, decks, porches and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the uniquely pretty flowers and sweet fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to winter gardens, flowering shrub borders, orange theme gardens and cottage gardens.

Witch Hazel is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, including clay soil, and full sun to part shade. It prefers a moist acidic soil rich in organic matter. In hot-summer climates it might appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the hottest afternoon hours. well-drained but moist soils in full sun to part shade. Little pruning is required but responds well to it for shaping or tree forming. Prune just after flowering before new leaves begin to emerge in late winter.
