Description

A more cold hardy and floriferous improvement on Delosperma cooperi, hailing from South Africa, the 'John Proffitt' Hardy Ice Plant forms a 2-inch high ground-hugging carpet of succulent narrow leaves that for most of the warm season is covered in lustrous, lavender-purple, quill-form flowers with white eyes and buttery yellow stamens. The attractive grey-green leaves turn to a gorgeous purple during the winter. Excellent for use in garden beds or containers. As with other ice plants, well-drained soil is a must.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to around 2 inches tall and spreading 24 inches or more wide, the John Proffitt Ice Plant is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or combination container gardens or in groupings or massed along the borders of walkways and paths, patios and garden beds. Very nice around rocks and boulders. A fine addition to succulent and cactus gardens, rock gardens, purple theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  12 inches apart for mass planting

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, Ice Plant is very easy to grow. It requires a well-drained lightly moist to dry soil and is very drought tolerant when established. Will tolerate rainy periods but constantly soggy or wet soil is a killer. It performs best in full sun but will tolerate part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best overall performance.
