Description
A breathtakingly beautiful coniferous evergreen, Cedrus deodara 'Karl Fuchs' is a tall growing and narrow selection of Himalayan cedar with uniquely layered, gracefully pendulous branches clothed with splendid silvery blue fine-needled foliage on an upright, pyramidal form. A clone selected by Horstmann Nursery in Germany from a group of seedlings originating from seed that was collected in the Paktia province of Afghanistan, Karl Fuchs is a more cold hardy variety withstanding temperatures to -20F. A fine specimen or addition to a privacy screen planting.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and pyramidal form up to 35 feet tall and 15 feet wide at the base, the Karl Fuchs Deodar Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, as a background, or in privacy screen plantings in large landscape borders. Really nice near lakes and other bodies of water and around large boulders. Young trees can be grown in large containers but will eventually need transplanting to the landscape. A fine addition to conifer gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 10 feet apart for privacy screens; 20 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
When planted right and in the right spot, the Karl Fuchs Deodar Cedar is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Established trees are quite drought tolerant. As with so many other coniferous evergreens, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Good drainage is essential. Some shade is tolerated however trees won't be as full. Exceptionally low maintenance requiring no pruning except to remove a stray or damaged branch.

Karl Fuchs Deodar Cedar arrived in perfect condition, tall and well-proportioned. Planted in ground the following day and seems to be thriving. This is a cold-hardier variety of Deodar Cedar commonly seen in the Himalayas so it should do well here where I live in zone 6a.
