Description

Bring on the drama! If you want to make a huge statement in shady parts of your yard, include 'Katsura', one of the boldest and most colorful Pieris on the market. Katsura blooms like other Pieris varieties in spring, but what sets her apart Katsura from other varieties is her continuous and colorful wine-red new leaves that keep on coming through spring and summer. As the new leaves mature they turn to a handsome dark green. In early spring, her elegant, slightly fragrant, bell-shaped lilac-white flowers with a lilac skirt are born on rose-colored racemes are lilac-white with a lilac skirt. A compact habit to 3 to 5 feet tall and wide makes Katsura a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, Katsura Pieris is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in shady to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders and home foundation plantings. Pieris do especially well on fertile embankments, hillsides and slopes. We've had good long-term success growing them in pots, planters and other containers and they are a fine addition to Asian-theme gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for solid hedges and mass plantings;  7 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Plant your Katsura Pieris in a moist but well drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Add organic compost to heavy clay or poor quality native soils. Pieris prefer growing in a site that provides morning sun with afternoon shade or all-day filtered sun or dappled shade.
