Description
A very handsome and worthy coniferous evergreen tree for cooler climates in USDA Zones 5a to 7b the Korean Fir sports slightly ascending and layered branches densely clothed with short but broad needles that are shiny dark green above and silver beneath. As with other firs, this one produces abundant cones from a young age that are purple-blue in color and stand upright like 3-inch long candles on the branches. A somewhat slow grower adding 8 to 10 inches in height per year and forming a compact pyramid 20 to 30 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide when grown up, the Korean Fir makes for a distinctive focal point specimen, corner plant in home foundation plantings, or in privacy screen plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense pyramid 20 to 30 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, the Korean Fir is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping or privacy screen in sunny to partially shaded landscape beds and borders. Also excellent for framing the corners of homes and other buildings and structures. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 7 feet for screen plantings; 15 feet or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Korean Fir is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. This for does not like hot and humid climates.
