Description

With a flower form and color like no other and sure to be a conversation piece, the 'Koromo Shikibu' Azalea explodes in spring with unique and beautiful spider-type lavender flowers that literally smother the mound of foliage. The unusual flowers have strap-like petals about an 1.5 inches long and 1/2 inch wide and, unlike most evergreen azaleas, have a sweet but subtle fragrance. In our gardens we see a good out-of-season bloom in the fall. Deep green evergreen foliage turns red in fall on an upright mounding shrub that might grow to 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide at maturity. This one prefers part to mostly shade and reports from gardeners around the country indicate cold hardiness to Zone 5b and heat tolerance to Zone 9a.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Kormo Shikibu Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings, mass plantings, or as a low hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, azalea and rhododendron gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid hedges;  6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Evergreen Azaleas are easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. They prefer a moist but well-drained and acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part sun. Morning sun with shade or filtered sun in the afternoon is ideal. Evening sun is fine. Mostly shade is fine.
