Description

A natural and carefree beauty that lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition, 'Koster' is a compact version of the Hinoki cypress growing to about 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at maturity with an upright, narrow pyramidal form, which makes it an excellent choice as an accent or specimen in smaller garden spaces or containers. It features horizontal feathery sprays of dark olive green foliage with branchlets that gracefully curve downwards. During winter in cold climates the foliage might take on an attractive bronze tint. It grows at a somewhat slow rate of 4 to 6 inches per year and is very long-lived to 70 years or more.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing somewhat slowly in a pyramidal form 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Kosteri Honoki Cypress is ideal for use as an eye-catching focal point specimen in smaller garden spaces. Also effective in small groupings. It does very well in containers provided the container has a drainage hole(s) at the bottom and a quality potting soil is used, and is suitable for bonsai. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian themed gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Koster Hinoki Cypress is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. As with most other coniferous evergreens, a constantly wet soil can cause problems with the roots. It is moderately drought tolerant but will appreciate an occasional watering during prolonged periods of dry weather. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning is required. If you prune, only trim back the new growth of the current season. Koster has performed wonderfully here in our Zone 8a gardens in north-central Georgia with no significant negative characteristics.
