Description

Lemon Balm is an attractive perennial herb with you guessed it...lemon scented and flavored edible leaves that can be added to salads, soups, sauces or vegetables and to flavor teas. Ornamentally, its wrinkled, ovate, medium green leaves on mounding plants make it a fine textural addition to herb gardens and other garden beds. It tends to like life on the cool side so those of you in the hot climates of Zones 8 and 9 should provide it with some afternoon shade. Throughout the summer, tiny, two-lipped white flowers appear that the honeybees and other beneficial pollinators love. The dried leaves may be added to sachets and potpourri and used in herbal medicine for a variety of purposes. 

"Melissa" in the scientific name of this plant means "honeybee," which is also the name of a Cretan princess who first discovered how to obtain honey.


Landscape Uses

Growing up to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide, Lemon Balm is ideal for use in the front of the border in herb and perennial gardens. It can also be grown in pots, planters and other containers.  It is a fine addition to pollinator gardens, fragrance gardens, edible gardens and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

Lemon Balm is very easy to grow in most any average to poor, dry to moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade; full sun in northern areas but some afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Constantly soggy soil can cause root rot. Removal of spent flower stalks encourages new leaves, which have the best fragrance.
