Description
Always wanted a butterfly bush but haven't had the room to grow one? Meet Lil' Grape, one of the smallest-growing butterfly bushes on the market. Topping out at 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, it is a perfect fit for small garden spaces and containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor seating and living spaces. Beginning in June and continuing through frost, it features 6- to 8-inch-long wands of rich purple, honey-scented flowers. The butterflies and hummingbirds will flock to and thank you for planting this one. Exceptionally easy to grow, just provide Lil Grape with 5 or more hours of direct sunlight daily and moist but well-drained soil of average fertility.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright, rounded mound 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, Lil Grape Butterfly Bush is ideal as an accent in small garden spaces or as a solo or centerpiece in container gardens. Where space allows, it is excellent in groupings or as a low hedge. We suggest planting in a pot at least 14 inches in diameter. It is a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, xeric gardens (which have low water needs), and purple-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 2 feet apart for solid hedges; 5 or more feet apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Lil Grape Butterfly Bush is exceptionally easy to grow. It thrives with 5 or more hours of direct sunlight daily. It isn't too picky about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil when young; however, it becomes quite drought-tolerant once established. As with so many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. No deadheading is required, though you can remove spent flowers if you want.
