Description
If you've always wanted to enjoy the beauty of a Bald Cypress but didn't have room for such a large-growing tree, 'Lyndsey's Skyward' is an excellent choice for smaller spaces. It might reach 25 to 30 feet tall, but is only 6 to 10 feet wide when fully grown. Its upright, teardrop columnar form makes it a perfect selection for adding height where there isn't the space for a wider growing tree. As with its larger growing cousins, the bird-feather-like leaves emerge a brilliant light green, aging to a rich green and finally to an attractive copper-cinnamon for weeks in the fall. Its ascending, tiered branches with fibrous, golden brown bark provide interest in the garden during the winter months. An exceptionally adaptable and easy-to-grow North American native, Lyndsey's Skyward thrives in moist to wet soil in both hot southern climates and cold northern climates (USDA Zones 5-11). It is drought-tolerant once established, resistant to pest and disease problems, and has a non-aggressive root system, so it doesn't form those "knees" above ground as the species does.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 25 to 30 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, Lindsey's Skyward Bald Cypress tree is ideal for use as a specimen, in spaced groupings at least 15 feet apart, or in single or staggered rows to line a walkway, driveway, street, or property line. Excellent as a small accent tree in home foundation plantings and around patios, as well as other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Its smaller stature makes it a perfect candidate for large containers. Highly adaptable, it thrives in moist to wet soil, even in shallow standing water, making it an excellent choice for use in swampy areas or near ponds or other bodies of water. A fine addition to native plant gardens, bog and rain gardens, conifer gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen, in spaced groupings at 15'+ apart, or use two to frame an entrance
Growing Preferences
Being a North American native, Lindsey's Skyward Bald Cypress is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow in a variety of soil types, including clay, and likes full sun to light shade. It grows best in consistently moist to wet soils, even in standing water, but tolerates dry periods once established. We suggest an occasional deep soaking during extended periods of dry weather. Maintenance is minimal to none. Pruning isn't necessary; however, an annual pruning in late winter can be performed to keep the tree more narrow or to remove lower branches. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy.
Do keep in mind that it is one of a few deciduous conifers, meaning its needles will drop in the fall and regrow in the spring. But its fibrous bark and tiered branching provide interest during the winter and contrast beautifully with the foliage during spring, summer, and fall.
