Description
As cute as its namesake, Lion Cub is a little Rudbeckia that will wow you with its cuteness and its phenomenal flower power. It naturally forms a dense mound of emerald green foliage to about a foot tall and 18 inches wide. From June through October it produces loads of pom pom like flowers with golden rays surrounding a dark brown eye. The sunburst of strap thin petals do not brown or fade, but develop a contrasting red edge with age. This quick-growing hybrid rudbeckia thrives in heat (Zones 8b to 11) and is excellent in garden beds or containers, which can be overwintered indoors in cold winter climates above USDA Zone 8b. An excellent cut flower.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing only 12 to 15 inches tall and 18 inches wide, the Lion Cub Rudbeckia is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings in large garden spaces. A fine addition to butterfly, cut flower, cottage and yellow color theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 15 inches apart for solid groupings; 30 inches apart for s[ace between plants.
Growing Preferences
The Lion Cub Rudbeckia is very easy to grow in a well-drained but moist soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sun for best flowering. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. Cold hardy in Zones 8b to 11. Above 8b this variety is best grown as an annual or in containers that can be overwintered in an indoor space where temperatures won't drop below freezing.
