Description
As her name suggests, Little Lady is a dwarf Lilac. She reaches 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, and is adored for its abundant panicles of dark pink buds that open to wonderfully fragrant, lilac-pink, tubular flowers with white throats in late spring. This one blooms late enough in spring that all the butterflies, beneficial pollinators, and hummingbirds will visit to feed from the flowers, which are also superb for cutting and display in your favorite vase or a floral arrangement. Lush, heart-shaped, fresh green leaves clothe the bush throughout the season, turning yellow shades in fall. Little Lady is excellent for planting in small garden beds and containers, or in groupings, or as a colorful and fragrant hedge in sunny landscapes and flowering shrub borders. Plant it near patios and other outdoor living spaces where the beautiful flowers and delightful fragrance can be enjoyed up close.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Little Lady Lilac is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces and pots, or in groupings, or as a hedge in larger landscape and flowering shrub borders. It is also a lovely accent shrub in home foundation plantings. In larger landscapes and flowering shrub borders, it can be planted in groupings or as a natural hedge. It is perfect for use on or near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor living spaces, where the beautiful flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed up close. A fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, cottage gardens, cut-flower gardens, butterfly and pollinator gardens, or pink-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 feet for solid hedges and grouping; 7 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Little Lady Lilac is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, and six or more hours of sunlight daily. It is drought-tolerant when established and prefers a pH close to neutral (6.5 to 7.5). Add pelletized lime if your soil is highly acidic. Fertilize in early spring with a light application of an organic plant food or a slow-release shrub and tree-type fertilizer. Prune as desired for shaping purposes or to control size after bloom in spring.
