Description
A striking selection of our native Eastern White Pine discovered in Vermont, Pinus strobus ‘Louie’ features glowing color year round. The long and thin needles emerge a vibrant yellow-green in spring darkening just a bit for summer before turning to a stunning brilliant yellow during the cool seasons. Louie forms an upright symmetrical pyramid 20 to 25 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide at its base when all grown up. That said, as some of our photos on this page show, it can be kept much narrower and/or dense with an annual candle pruning. A showy specimen in the sunny to mostly sunny landscape that will not go unnoticed!
Note: In USDA Zone 8 of the South the Eastern White Pine will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. In Zones 3-7 it will handle full sun.
Wildlife Benefits
The Eastern White Pine supports the Imperial Moth and its seeds are a favorite of black bears, rabbits, red squirrels, and many bird species. The canopy serves as a shelter for many birds and small mammals.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Louie Eastern White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen, in spaced groupings at 15 feet or more apart, as an accent in privacy screen plantings, or along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders. Also responds well to pruning for an outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to native plant gardens, conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, rock gardens and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 15 feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Eastern White Pine is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. It prefers an acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. As with so many other ornamental trees, a constantly soggy soil or wet can cause problems with the roots. responds well to pruning to control size or for shaping purposes such as for an outdoor Christmas tree.
