Description

Discovered in Lucerne Switzerland, this Blue-eyed grass is prized for its larger flowers and heavy bloom. Sisyrinchiumhas angustifolium 'Lucerne' forms attractive tufts of iris-like blue-green foliage from which rise thin stems topped with very cute star-shaped flowers with violet-blue petals surrounding a golden-yellow eye. Blooms in late spring to early summer with repeat flowering in moist sites. Highly adaptable, you can grow this one in moist to dry soils, though it has performed best for us in a consistently moist soil making it a perfect selection for those moisture retentive sites. A very low maintenance plant, this diminutive beauty is great for pollinators and early season butterflies and it's seeds enjoyed by birds.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 10 inches tall and spreading slowly to 8 to 12 inches or more, Lucerne Blue-Eyed Grass is a perfect choice for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border edger along garden beds or paths and walkways. It looks great around rocks and boulders around the garden pond. A fine addition to bog gardens, ornamental grass gardens and blue theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  10 inches for mass plantings;  24 inches or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Lucerne Blue-Eyed Grass is very easy to grow in most any moist to wet soil of average fertility and full sun to shade. Established plants have moderate drought tolerance. Can be grown in pots that are situated at the margins of the garden pond. Essentially maintenance free. It slowly naturalizes into clumps by spreading roots but is not invasive at all. We rarely fertilize or prune it. In areas that experience colder winters the foliage may need to be groomed or cut back to the ground before new growth emerges in spring.
