Description

Winner of the prestigious Award of Garen Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, 'Madame Emile Mouillere' is a beautiful classic Hydrangea first introduced in France in 1909. It has stood the test of time and, ever since, graced many gardens worldwide for good reasons. It is a heavy-flowering selection that blooms for months during summer and into fall. It features abundant, large globular clusters of pure-white, serrated flowers with a tiny sparkling pink, lavender, or blue eye at the center. The flowers may be very light blush pink with more sun, and the color of the eye depends on the soil's pH. The flower clusters are excellent for cutting, gorgeous, and long-lasting in a vase or floral arrangement. Extremely reliable, cold-hardy, easy to grow, and consistently blooming year after year in the garden, Madame Emile Mouillere is an outstanding flowering shrub for borders, containers, and foundation plantings in partial to full shade.

The breeder, Monsieur Emile Louis Mouillère, was a French horticulturist in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He made his home and hydrangea legend in Vendôme, France, where his family's hydrangea legacy lasted until the mid-1950s. He named this magnificent and beautiful cultivar after his wife.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide, the Madame Emile Mouillere Hydrangea is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in shady to partially shaded landscape borders, home foundation plantings, and perennial gardens. It is also suitable for growing in somewhat large containers of 14 inches or more in diameter. It is a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, shade and woodland gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  5-6 feet apart for solid hedge; 10+ feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Madame Emile Mouillere Hydrangea prefers full sun in northern zones 5 and 6, and some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon the farther south you go (USDA Zones 7-9). She adapts to various soil types; however, she prefers moist but well-drained loamy soil. Not too wet, though...Hydrangea don't like constantly soggy soil. This mophead blooms on old wood, so it should be pruned after all the blooms have faded. At this time, cut back the flowered stems to a strong pair of buds.
