Description
'Mariesii' is a variegated Hydrangea that will truly stop you in your tracks because it has so much to look at! For starters, its boldly variegated leaves look as though someone used a paintbrush to paint a wide white border around the edges of its rich green leaves. Mariesii Variegated has a different style of bloom than the traditional mophead Hydrangea macrophylla. The 4" wide lacecap flowers are comprised of bead-like florets at the center that do not open, but still show color. Surrounding the center is a outer layer of white or very faint-blue florets that are fertile and do in fact open. In acid soil the centers will be a deep gentian blue or pink in alkaline soil. The result is an absolutely beautiful plant with flowers that are great for fresh or dried floral arrangements.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally 4 to 5 feet tall and wide in a rounded mound, the Mariesii Variegated Hydrangea is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings to provide texture and color in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Stands out best against a dark background. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, and partially shaded woodland gardens and borders.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Hydrangea variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know that it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and place back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Mariesii Variegated Hydrangea is easy to grow in a moist well-drained soil of average fertility. Soil pH will effect flower color. An acid soil will create blue blooms and an alkaline soil creates pink flowers. The plants appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer climates but will tolerate more sun in cooler climates. We recommend at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. This hydrangea does not require pruning however can be pruned.
Note: Mariesii Variegated is a Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds that formed on "old wood" (during the previous year). This means that even though it is tempting to cut them back in the winter, when they are only bare sticks jutting out of the ground, don't do it. The flower buds are already formed and hidden in those bare sticks, so don't cut them off if you want flowers.
