If you're looking to add a tropical punch to your landscape with a very cold hardy plant that can handle temperatures down to -40F, 'Mars Madness' Hardy Hibiscus is a North American native perennial flowering shrub that wows with both foliage and flowers that are out of this world. A little later to bloom than other cultivars, the dinner plate size dark magenta-red flowers begin coming mid summer and continue nonstop through early fall. The flowers are produced from the top to the bottom of the plant, rather than only at the top like some older cultivars, and contrast remarkably well with the new leaves that emerge a coppery purple throughout the season maturing to deep olive green. Although the foliage is a little later to emerge in spring than some other types of plants, once it does start emerging the growth is rapid. The large, maple-like leaves are broadly smooth and form a full, billowy look on mounding plants that might reach 4.5 feet tall and 6 feet wide. A captivating specimen, grouping or hedge in the landscape. Especially nice around patios, pools and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
