Description
Mars Midget Pincushion Flower, Knautia macedonica, is a flower factory. From early summer well into fall, it features domed clusters of dazzling ruby-red flowers that rise above the foliage on thin, wiry stems that sway in the gentlest breeze. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will flock to flowers all season long, and they are great for cutting and display in fresh or dried floral arrangements. Mars Midget is a fantastic performer in well-drained soil with plenty of sun. However, it doesn't like the combination of high heat and humidity, preferring cooler nights and lower humidity. It is drought-tolerant when established.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 18 inches tall in flower, and 12 to 18 inches wide, the Mars Midget Pincushion Flower is ideal as an accent in smaller garden spaces and container gardens. It is especially lovely for groupings or mass plantings in perennial borders, cottage gardens, cutflower gardens, butterfly and pollinator gardens, hummingbird gardens, meadow gardens, and naturalized areas.
Suggested Spacing: 15 inches apart for mass plantings; 30 inches apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Mars Midget Pincushion Flower is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil and six or more hours of sunlight daily. It does not tolerate wet soils, so plant in a well-draining site. Heavy or dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. Plant it with the top of the root ball even with ground level, or in a raised bed or mound to ensure good drainage. Care and maintenance are minimal. Deadheading spent flower stems is not necessary, but it encourages heavier and longer rebloom. Feed in spring and again in summer with an organic plant food.
