Description

When browsing through a landscape or botanical garden, upon first observation of its foliage, one might ask if this plant is a shrub or a fern. Matcha Ball Ash Leaf Spirea is a tough but beautiful flowering shrub featuring multicolored foliage that adds unique and captivating texture to the landscape. Its fern-like leaves emerge in shades of red to orange-peach, gradually maturing to green by summer and finally to lovely yellow shades when cooler temperatures arrive in fall. Though its attractive foliage and naturally rounded form to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide are its best attributes, in late spring to early summer, large, spirea-like, conical spires of creamy white flowers are produced that the butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate. Macha Ball is an excellent addition to the perennial border, or in groupings, or as a natural hedge in landscape borders. Easy to grow in USDA Zone 3a-7b, it is extremely cold tolerant to -40F, insect and disease free, and deer and rabbits leave it alone.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, Matcha Ball Ash Leaf Spirea is ideal as a specimen accent in perennial gardens or home foundation plantings. It can be planted in impressive groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny landscape borders, bringing complementary texture and color to other plants. It also does very well in large container gardens such as whiskey barrels. It is a fine addition to Asian theme gardens, cottage gardens, and butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for hedges or solid groupings; 6 or more feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Macha Ball Ash Leaf Spirea is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, organically rich soil in full to mostly sun. Light shade is tolerated, but plants will flower more with more sun. Six or more hours of sunlight daily are suggested. Spent flowers can be deadheaded to encourage extended bloom. We've seen no serious pest or disease problems.
