Description
Named after the Greek legend, Allium 'Medusa' is a unique and colorful ornamental onion featuring thin grey-green leaves that twist at the tips and nodding, snake-like buds at the tips of the flower stems. These buds open to 2-inch diameter spherical clusters of amethyst-purple fragrant flowers that rise on thin stems above a 20 to 24-inch tall mound of grey-green grassy foliage from mid or late summer through early fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting and display in a vase or flower arrangement. Medusa is a charming perennial and eye-catcher in the garden and will capture the attention of butterflies and other beneficial pollinators who will thank you for planting it!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 20 to 24 inches tall and equally wide, Medusa Allium is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings in larger perennial borders and herb gardens. It is a fine addition to perennial gardens, purple theme gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, rock gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs once established).
Growing Preferences
Alliums are easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun or partial shade. For the best flowering and overall performance, we suggest five or more hours of sunlight daily. They are not picky about soil pH.
