Description
Found as a sport on Picea abies ‘Acrocona’, a variety known for its cone production, 'Medusa' Norway Spruce also produces abundant red cones but on a slow-growing, very cute miniature version forming a dense rounded globe or mound to maybe 2 to 2.5 feet tall and 2.5 to 3 feet wide or so when all grown up. Adding only 1 to 2 inches in size per year, that can take a while! Its tiny slightly twisted branches are clothed in bright florescent green new needles maturing to a rich dark green. Its petiteness, abundant cone production, and color an texture make Medusa a fascinating accent plant in miniature or small-space gardens and containers. A no-maintenance conifer, it prefers a sunny spot and most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility will do.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Medusa Dwarf Norway Spruce is ideal for use as a specimen in containers and small garden spaces, home foundation plantings and conifer or rock gardens. Can also be used in groupings with plants spaced 4 or more feet apart.
Suggested Spacing: We suggest using this unusual plant as a specimen or in spaced groupings or rows with plants 4 feet or more apart.
Growing Preferences
Medusa Dwarf Norway Spruce is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. It prefers a sandy loam. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can lead to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil. It grows best in full sun however in Zone 8 in hot-summer climates it will prefer some shade or filtered sun during the midafternoon hours, when temperatures are highest and the sun most intense. Once established water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
