Description

With so many fine attributes, where do we start? Unlike most other native azaleas that bloom in early to mid spring, the Millennium Swamp Azalea produces its abundant round clusters of honeysuckle-shaped fragrant flowers in late spring to early summer. While some are calling the flower color red, in our gardens it has red buds that open to deep dusky pink flowers. Each 5-petaled flower reflexes to form an almost perfect star at the end of the trumpet the butterflies and hummingbirds are sure to notice. The flowers contrast beautifully against the backdrop of some of the most attractive deep blue-green foliage we've seen on any native azalea. The handsome leaves have striking silver undersides, are arrow-shaped and thick, and arranged in whorls, which provides a unique look and outstanding contrast and texture in the landscape. An exceptionally hardy and attractive variety of Rhododendron viscosum, Millennium is cold hardy to -20F, which makes it a fine selection for northern gardeners. This one prefers a consistently moist soil, hence the name. One of our favorite native azaleas and we think you'll love it too!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Millenium Swamp Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or grouped in larger landscapes and woodland borders that provide partial shade, preferably shade or filtered sun in the afternoon. Perfect for shady areas where to the soil tends to stay consistently moist to wet. A very nice selection for growing in pots and other containers. A fine addition to azalea and rhododendron gardens, pink theme gardens, woodland gardens, bog gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens and native gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for a solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Millennium Swamp Azalea is very easy to grow in moist any moist but well-drained, humus rich, acidic soil and dappled shade, filtered sun, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It prefers a moisture retentive soil however will tolerate short dry periods. Native azaleas are very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is growing way outside the natural form of the plant, but not so much that it would spoil the natural look.
