Description

We first saw a 'Miss Kim' Lilac many years ago at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and couldn't believe that the well-established 6 feet by 6 feet shrub had survived the summer heat and humidity over the years. Not only does Miss Kim handle the heat as far south as USDA Zone 8a (maybe 8b?) she also withstands old temperatures down to -30F.  Blooming later than other lilacs, she extends the season with LOADS of deep purple buds that open to some of the most intoxicatingly fragrant, lavender-purple flowers you will ever encounter. Powdery mildew resistant rich green foliage is burgundy-tinged in fall. Great as an accent in flowering shrub borders or near patios, porches, decks or other outdoor living spaces where the beautiful flowers and wonderful aroma can be enjoyed from up close.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Miss Kim Lilac is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Perfect near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens or purple theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Plant your Miss Kim Lilac in full sun in northern zones and provide some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons in Zone 8. She likes a moist but well-drained soil with pH close to neutral (6.5 to 7.5). Add pelletized lime if your soil is extremely acid. Fertilize once, in early spring, with a light application of an organic plant food or slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer. Prune as desired for shaping purposes or for size control after bloom in spring.
