Description

This is the single stem tree form version of the Miss Kim Lilac. We first saw her years ago at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and couldn't believe that the well-established shrub had survived the summer heat and humidity over the years. Not only does Miss Kim handle the heat as far south as USDA Zone 8a (maybe 8b?) she also withstands cold temperatures down to -30F.  Blooming later than other lilacs, she extends the season with LOADS of deep purple buds that open to some of the most intoxicatingly fragrant, lavender-purple flowers you will ever encounter. Powdery mildew resistant rich green foliage is burgundy-tinged in fall. At 8 to 10 feet tall with a canopy about 6 feet wide or so, this tree form is a fine focal point specimen near patios, porches, decks or other outdoor living spaces where the beautiful flowers and wonderful aroma can be enjoyed from up close, or use two to frame an entrance.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and equally as wide, the Miss Kim Lilac Tree is ideal for use as a specimen or two can be used to frame an entrance. Perfect near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces where the flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens or purple theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen or use two to frame an entryway

Growing Preferences

Plant your Miss Kim Lilac in full sun in northern zones and provide some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons in Zone 8. She likes a moist but well-drained soil with pH close to neutral (6.5 to 7.5). Add pelletized lime if your soil is extremely acid. Fertilize once, in early spring, with a light application of an organic plant food or slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer. Prune as desired for shaping purposes or for size control after bloom in spring.
