Description
Viburnum lantana 'Mohican', commonly known as Wayfaringtree Viburnum, is a very handsome shrub featuring thick and leathery, finely-toothed, ovate blue-green leaves that become darker green taking on some purplish-red tones in fall. In mid spring, abundant and very pretty clusters of small white flowers in domed clusters appear that are followed by showy bright red berries the birds will thank you for. At 7 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up, Mohican is a more compact cultivar suitable for smaller garden spaces and a fine addition to the flowering shrub border.
Although in its native habitat this shrub is somewhat common along waysides, the original meaning of the common name of Wayfaringtree is unknown.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 7 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide or a little wider wide at maturity, the Mohican Viburnum can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree. Either way, it is an eye-catching specimen or natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also useful to frame corners of homes or other buildings or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Viburnum gardens. white theme gardens, wildlife gardens, cottage gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Mohican Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. As with so many other ornamental plants it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Quite drought tolerant when established and we've seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven't touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
