Description
A cross hybrid between Iris ensata and Iris pseudacorus, both water irises, the Moonlit Field Pseudata Iris, also known as the Tsukiyono Iris, is a truly incredible creation that blooms later than other iris, extending the iris-blooming season. Though it will grow in wet soils and even standing water, it thrives in average moist but well-draining soils, where it gradually spreads to form a dense, upright clump to 3 feet or so wide and 3 to 4 feet tall over time. In late spring to early summer, exquisite flowers perched atop sturdy stems rise 30 to 36 inches high. With a soft and soothing color, the flowers have creamy white petals gently brushed with lavender around the edges. The style arms and signals are yellow and outlined in purple. Needless to say, the flowers are excellent for cutting and displaying in a vase or flower arrangement. Sporting very healthy, rich green foliage through the season, Moonlit Field is exceptionally easy to grow and vigorous in USDA Zones 4-9., and is one of those plants that will always have you looking forward to its late spring bloom!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3.5 to 4 feet tall and spreading equally as wide over time, the Moonlit Field Pseudata Iris is ideal as an accent plant in smaller garden spaces and containers or grouped where space allows in garden beds and borders. Because it will grow in wet soils or standing water, it is excellent for planting in those wet areas of the garden or along streams and around pond margins. Plants grown in pots can be situated in the margins of the garden pond with the pots edge 2 or 3 inches under the water surface. It is also an excellent vertical accent plant in home foundation plantings and a fine addition to Iris gardens, bog gardens, pond gardens, Asian theme gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, white or blue theme gardens, and rock gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Moonlit Field Pseudata Iris is not invasive and easy to grow in moist but well-drained average garden soil, wet soil, and standing water. When grown in a pot that will be situated in the garden pond, the top of the pot can be submerged up to 2 to 3 inches below the water surface. It thrives in full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily for best flowering.
