Description
'Mrs. Cesarini' is a beautiful dwarf selection of our native Colorado Spruce. It forms a broad mound, 3 feet tall and about 4 feet wide, with short branches densely clothed in short, rich blue-green needles, and orange buds at every stem tip during winter. The new growth in spring and again in summer is a vibrant light green. Extremely tough, the foliage is resistant to winter burn down to -50°F, and maintenance is minimal to none, as it maintains its dense form on its own. The more wind and/or cold this one gets, the better it does! Drought-tolerant and very easy to grow in a sunny to partly shaded environment, and well-behaved growth with handsome texture and color in the ground or containers, these outstanding qualities make the Mrs. Cesarina Colorado Spruce one of those unique focal point plants you want to choose just the right spot for in your landscape.
This selection was discovered by Joe Cesarini in Long Island, New York, and was named after his wife.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly (3-5 inches per year) in a dense, rounded mound to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, Mrs. Cesarini Dwarf Colorado Spruce is ideal for use as an accent specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings. It is well-suited for containers that can be placed on or around patios, decks, and other outdoor seating and living areas. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, alpine gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: We recommend using this unusual conifer as a specimen
Growing Preferences
The Mrs. Cesarini Dwarf Colorado Spruce is easy to grow in damp to moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. Constantly soggy or wet soils can lead to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil. Established plants have good drought tolerance. It grows best in full sun but may appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon in areas with hot summers. Once established, water needs are pretty low when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil are dry, provide water. No pruning is necessary unless you need to remove a stray stem.
