Description
Among the finest of small flowering trees as a focal point, the Nightfall Weeping Japanese Snowbell is an elegant small tree growing to maybe 7 or 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide with cascading branches lushly clothed in deep purple leaves that transition to greenish purple in summer. Blooming at a young age, from mid to late spring to early summer, a profusion of lightly fragrant, bell-shaped, creamy white flowers appear from top to bottom of the long branches that weep to the ground. Its smaller stature and narrow habit make Nightfall a perfect fit for smaller urban garden spaces or large planters.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Nightfall Weeping Japanese Snowbell is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders and home foundation plantings. Can also be grown in large planters. An dramatic focal point near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, fragrance gardens, topiary gardens, cottage gardens, and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 9 feet or more apart
Growing Preferences
The Nightfall Weeping Japanese Snowbell Tree is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or morning sun with afternoon shade or all-day lightly filtered sun. In Zone 8 where summers are hot, we suggest filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic.
