Description

Great for the edible and naturalized landscape, the Nova Elderberry is a vigorous North American native flowering and edible fruiting shrub. It is a lovely shrub forming a rounded mound of lush foliage that grows several feet shorter than the species and other varieties. In late spring to early summer, abundant, large, flat-topped clusters of white flowers appear above the foliage, followed by heavy sets of purple-black berries. The flowers attract numerous beneficial pollinators and hummingbirds, and the birds love the berries. Many folks grow the plant for its edible berries, which are well known for being high in nutrients and antioxidants. The berries are quite tart to eat raw, but excellent for making juice, jams, jellies, and Elderberry wine. Syrup made from elderberry is said to stimulate the immune system. While a vigorous grower to 6 feet tall and wide, it responds well to pruning for size control or shaping purposes. Easily maintained, trouble-free, and hardy in USDA Zones 3-8 (9?), Nova Elderberry is a beautiful plant that deserves a spot in every garden!

NOTE: Like our other plants and trees, our fruit plants are grown in containers outdoors, so they are fully rooted and landscape-ready upon arrival.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 feet tall and wide, the Nova Elderberry is ideal for a specimen, grouping, or natural hedge along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders and other natural areas. Annual pruning in late winter forms a dense shrub suitable for landscape borders. It is a fine addition to the edible landscape, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and white-themed gardens.

Growing Preferences

Nova Elderberry grows best in acidic, organically rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It tolerates periodically wet soils. Five or more hours of sunlight daily is suggested for the best flowering and berry production.
