Description

A literally glowing selection that captures the attention of all visitors to our gardens, 'Okina' Liriope, commonly called Frosted Monkey Grass, features both outstanding foliage and flower color. In spring, new leaves emerge with the top two-thirds or more of the leaf a solid pure white and the bottom third a dark green. As the season progresses the leaves become speckled white and finally to speckled light green. As with other Liriope muscari, it mid to late summer spikes of lilac color flowers resembling hyacinths rise just above the foliage mound. The butterflies and hummingbirds will love the flowers. Eye-catching in garden beds or containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an arching mound 10 to 12 inches tall and around 18 inches wide, Okina Liriope is ideal for use as an accent in smaller partially shaded garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border along paths, walkways and patios. Also excellent as a groundcover in shady home foundation plantings and under the canopies of shade trees. A fine addition to white theme gardens, butterfly gardens, hummingbird gardens, and shade gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  15 inches apart for mass planting or solid border edger

Growing Preferences

Okina Liriope is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade to part shade. Some morning sun or all-day heavily filtered sun is fine, but direct afternoon sun is best avoided. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Though evergreen, we usually trim plants back to near the soil line in late winter, prior to new growth emerging.
