Description

A North Carolina State University release, Onslow produces one of the largest berries of rabbiteye varieties and is self-fertile, which means you need only plant one bush to get berries. Mid to late season you can expect a bountiful crop of very pretty, medium blue sweet and tasty blueberries that also have sweet aroma. The berries have excellent firmness and a dry picking scar. Onslow has an upright growth habit with outstanding yellow fall foliage color, making it a fine choice for the edible, ornamental landscape. Onslow is also a good choice for commercial plantings and has shown good freeze resistance as well as high resistance overall to disease.

Note:  Though the Onslow Blueberry is self-fertile and a pollinator is not necessary, planting near one of these varieties may increase berry size and quality: Alapaha, BrightwellDeliteOchlockonee, Tifblue, Powder BlueColumbus

Growing Preferences

Blueberry plants grow best in an acidic (pH of 4.8 to 5.2), organically rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. The more sun the better for best berry production. Onslow is said to tolerate soils with higher pH (less acid). The shallow, fibrous roots of blueberry plants like a consistently moist but well-drained soil which can be provided by with a layer of organic mulch. Although Onslow Blueberry is self-fertile, cross-pollination may produce larger berries and possibly better better production. Therefore it is best to plant more than one variety that will bloom at the same time. Blueberry season can be extended by planting early, mid-season and late varieties. Make sure to plant two different cultivars/varieties for each season. USDA Zones: 6a-9a  Find Your Zone
