Description
The Ostrich Plume Astilbe features abundant, gracefully weeping plumes of showy pink flowers. The flowers are held on stems that rise to 30 to 36 inches high above a mound of fern-like, rich green foliage. At the peak of bloom, they are excellent for cutting display in fresh flower arrangements or hung up to dry in a dark room for future use in dried flower arrangements. Astilbes combine beautifully with hosta lilies, perennial ferns, and many other shade-loving perennials. Ostrich Plume is a trouble-free and easy-to-grow plant that the butterflies will thank you for planting, but the deer will turn up their nose to.
Landscape & Garden Uses
At 24 to 36 inches tall in bloom and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Ostrich Plume Astilbe is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and container gardens, or in groupings or drifts in partially shaded garden beds and borders. It is also a fine addition to cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, pink-themed gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for solid groupings; 3 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Ostrich Plume Astilbe is very easy to grow in most any consistently moist to moist but well-drained soil in part to full shade. Though it might tolerate full sun in cool-summer climates and consistently moist soil, we think Astilbe looks and performs its best with a break from direct sunlight during the hottest afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. Spent flower plumes can be removed if desired.
