Description

As its name suggests, Pancake Juniper is a diminutive, if not the most diminutive, version of Juniperus horizontalis, a fantastic and highly adaptable and versatile North American native groundcover plant. It forms a circular, dense, ground-hugging mat, hence its name, that is only 3 inches tall, spreading to 4 feet wide or so. The soft-textured, feathery, evergreen foliage emerges light blue-gray, maturing to gray-green, and taking on a purple hue during winter. Super hardy and easy to grow in USDA Zones 3a, where average winter low temperatures are -40F, and heat tolerant to Zone 8b, and highly versatile in the landscape, it is suitable in design for erosion control on slopes, as a groundcovber in landscape borders and home foundation plantings, or as a lovely spiller plant over walls and in containers. It can also be trained to form an upright topiary that looks like a cascading waterfall.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 inches tall and spreading in a dense, circular mat to 4 feet or more in width, the Pancake Juniper is ideal for use as a groundcover in landscape borders and home foundation plantings, as well as for erosion control on slopes. It will cascade over walls and is an excellent choice for underplanting small trees, such as Japanese Maple and Crape Myrtle. It is also a lovely spiller plant in container gardens, and can be trained to form an upright, waterfall-like topiary plant. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, blue theme gardens, rock gardens, native plant gardens, and xeric gardens (low-water-use).

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 3.5 feet apart for groundcover; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Pancake Juniper is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average to low fertility. Once established, it has high drought tolerance. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot and other harmful plant diseases, so ensure the planting site has good drainage. It prefers six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. Extremely low maintenance, it requires no pruning.
