Description

A pink version of the American Yellowwood, 'Perkins Pink' is a lovely North American native shade tree that provides year-round interest in the landscape with foliage, flowers, fragrance, bark, and form. Reaching up to 45 feet tall and equally as wide, it has an open, graceful, spreading crown. After the attractive green leaves have emerged, abundant and gorgeous hanging flower panicles, resembling those of wisteria, are loaded with fragrant pink flowers in late spring to early summer. The foliage turns brilliant shades of yellow and/or orange during the fall. The smooth gray bark and branching form add winter interest in the landscape. It has a deep root system, making it drought-tolerant once established, and also allows shade-loving perennials, shrubs, and other plants to grow beneath it. Excellent for outdoor sitting and living spaces, where it provides some cooling shade during the warm seasons, or in a meadow or a sunny to partially shaded woodland border. It makes an excellent specimen for a winter or wildlife garden, as this tree not only provides nesting sites for songbirds but also high-quality pollen and nectar for beneficial pollinators. One of those "must-have" trees for the home landscape if you have the room.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 30 to 45 feet tall and 40 to 45 feet wide, the Perkins Pink American Yellowwood tree is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. Very nice around patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces, where it will provide welcome shade during the hot summer months. It is a fine addition to shade gardens, children's gardens, recreational areas, bird gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, sunny and partially shaded woodland gardens, fragrance gardens, native plant gardens, cottage gardens, and white theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  50 feet or more apart for space between tees

Growing Preferences

The Perkins Pink American Yellowwood Tree is easy to grow in moist, well-draining soil with average or better fertility, and prefers full sun to part shade. Six or more hours of sunlight daily is suggested. It has a deep root system, making it drought-tolerant once established. It is not particular about soil pH. It prefers a site where it won't be exposed to high winds. No pruning is necessary; however, it can be done during the summer for shaping purposes or to remove lower branches, thereby exposing more of the trunk. Dead or damaged branches can be removed at any time of year.
