Description

This is the rare, tree-form version of the Pink Dawn Viburnum, which heralds the arrival of spring when, in late winter, her abundant clusters of deep reddish-pink buds open to soft pink flowers that exude an intoxicating, heavenly fragrance in the garden. In cold winter climates, flowers bloom on naked stems from late winter to early spring. In warm winter areas (including the South and Pacific Northwest coast), flowers bloom on naked stems from late fall to early spring. Cut a few flowers off to enjoy them indoors in your favorite vase. Following the flowers are clusters of red berries that turn black by fall. The attractive, toothed, narrow-ovate leaves (2-4" long) emerge in spring with bronze tints maturing to deep green and then a lovely burgundy wine color in fall. Plant this one near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor areas where the fragrant flowers can be enjoyed up close.


Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Pink Dawn Viburnum Tree is ideal for use as a specimen in landscape and flowering shrub borders, and as a lovely accent in home foundation plantings. Make sure to plant near patios, porches, decks, and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from up close. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, pink theme gardens, cut flower gardens, viburnum gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 10 feet or more apart for space between plants


Growing Preferences

Pink Dawn Viburnum is very easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, and it prefers full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy, consistently damp to moist soil. To ensure good drainage and moisture retention, amend heavy clay or poor soils with compost, bagged topsoil, or other organic matter. As with many other ornamental plants, it does not thrive in constantly soggy or wet conditions. Deer haven't touched it in our gardens. We recommend 5 hours or more of direct sunlight for optimal flowering. Responds very well to pruning for shaping purposes. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
