Description

If you love Tea Olives, you're going to love Pink Flush, scientifically known as Osmanthus fragrans 'Yinbi Shuanghui', a new variety featuring variegated pink, white and green leaves with a bloom season spanning up to 8 months! We've only had this one for a year in our gardens but it seems to be just as cold hardy as the green-leaved species, Osmanthus fragans (Fragrant White tea Olive). For now, we're listing it as cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b while awaiting feedback from those testing it outdoors in Zone 7a. You'll be happy to know that Yinbi Shuanghui begins blooming at a very young age, and just as heavy as it green-leaved cosuins. We've seen and smelled flowers on less than 1-year old plants we're growing in small, quart size pots.

New leaves emerge a white variegated with pink and green and the flowers have the same wonderful aroma as other Osmanthus fragans cultivars. The flowers are small but one plant will fill a front or back yard with wonderful aroma. The scent is really indescribable. It's just one of those things you have to experience for yourself. You can grow this one as an evergreen shrub or remove lower branches to as she grows to form a spectacular small tree. A must have for Tea Olive enthusiasts and collectors!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide depending on pruning, the Pink Flush Tea Olive can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. The shrub can be kept smaller with occasional pruning. As a shrub, its dense foliage makes it ideal for use as a natural or clipped evergreen hedge, privacy screen, or background, or to frame corners or fill voids between widely-spaced windows in home foundation plantings. As it grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree for use as a focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, cottage gardens, white theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for a solid hedge or privacy screen;  16 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Pink Flush Tea Olive is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained acidic to neutral soil and full sun to mostly shade. We suggest at least 3 hours of direct sunlight per day or all-day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established. Since growing it in our gardens, we've seen no insect or disease problems and deer don't touch it. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. No pruning necessary however responds well to to it for shaping purposes, hedges or to tree form.

Purchased them in March and arrived well packed but a few brown leaves just like the instruction sheet said they might have during winter shipment. Decided to put in big pots until they grow some and after two weeks all kinds of new growth. Can't wait to smell how fragrant the flowers on them might be.-----------------------------------------------We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review and photo!!
