Description
When spring and early summer flowering perennials are winding down their blooms for the season, the beautiful Pink Planet Allium, an ornamental onion, is just getting started. From midsummer to early fall, it features large, 3" diameter globe-shaped clusters of pretty, soft lavender-pink flowers atop sturdy stems that rise above a grassy foliage clump. The flowers look more lavender to us, but they're very pretty either way. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will surely notice and feed on the flowers, which are also excellent for cutting and last up to two weeks in a vase. Very easy to grow, Pink Planet Allium is highly heat-, humidity-, and drought-tolerant when established, and you might be happy to know that deer and rabbits turn their nose up at it. It is also sterile, so it won't spread everywhere from seed. Forming a grass clump to 18 inches tall and two feet wide, it is a lovely perennial that adds a unique flower form, pleasing color, and texture to the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 18 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide, the Pink Planet Allium is ideal as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers. It can be planted in groupings or as a border in perennial gardens. It is a fine addition to perennial gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, hummingbird gardens, cut flower gardens, purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens, and rock gardens.
Growing Preferences
Pink Planet Allium is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. It is highly drought-tolerant when established. It will thrive in full sun or part shade. Five or more hours of sunlight daily is suggested. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils.
